9th Annual
AWARDS DINNER
February 18, 2010
Infinity Park Event Center
950 S. Birch Street
Glendale, CO

HAVE YOU SELECTED YOUR 2009 JOB OF THE YEAR PROJECT?

A friendly reminder to be thinking about and taking pictures* of your outstanding 2009 jobs and submitting a nomination(s) for a CRA Job of the Year Award.

*Be sure to get lots of photos -- take them from start to finish!

Rocktober. How many of you thought we would be hearing that word when the Rockies were 15 ½ games back in June. It's amazing what a change and management can do. Obviously Clint Hurdle is a good manager since he took the Rockies to the World Series only two years ago. For whatever reason he couldn't get the team to play winning baseball this year and management felt it had to make a change. The Rockies new manager Jim Tracy seems to have a much different demeanor the Hurdle. While Hurdle had the old school chew 'em out my way or the highway approach, Tracy seems to be much more cerebral and more of a players coach. None of us can know exactly what happens day to day in the Rockies dressing room but what ever it was it worked and another World Series appearance would be great for our city.

In our business we can often have similar management issues. If a crew starts to produce less than they are capable of what is the course of action? Do you manage Hurdle or Tracy style? I know within our organization that different crews can work better or worse depending on who the project manager is. When we can identify which projects and managers a crew can be most effective with we schedule them that way. Pay, respect, recognition - different things motivate different people and a skilled manager who can recognize that will be the most effective in getting the most out of an individual. Thankfully, we don't have fans and media coming down on us, but we may have an owner. In both the roofing business and baseball business productivity is necessary for survival, whether is new work or ticket sales, at the end of the day it's all about the dollars produced. I hope all of you can have your own company Rocktober's and finish the year productively and profitably.

CRA Awards Dinner- Call for Entries

CRA has announced a call for entries for both the Job of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Job of the Year Awards are given to roofing contractors in recognition of their outstanding work. Awards are given in four categories based on size of contract. Nominated projects must have been worked on and completed in 2009.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual in the roofing industry whose contributions have impacted our industry in a positive way. A Lifetime nominee should be an individual who has contributed to the success, development and continuation of the Colorado Roofing Industry. You may nominate anyone who is currently working in the industry, retired from the industry, or is deceased.

All entries must be received by Dec. 4 and judging will be conducted by a panel of roofing industry experts selected by CRA.

Let's continue to "raise the bar" in the roofing industry. The Awards Dinner gives those of us in the industry time to stop and congratulate ourselves and each other on the difficult, complex, dangerous and exciting work we do every day. Take the time to showcase the professionalism and expertise in your company.

ITEMS TO NOTE . . . FROM ACROSS THE NATION

NRCA continues to get mixed messages about the state of the economy—at least for the roofing industry—with the key driver being a sense of uncertainty. The National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) reported overall housing starts increased in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 598,000—but single-family starts declined 3 percent. According to NAHB, the decline is attributable to the pending expiration—on Nov. 30—of the $8,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers.

Nonresidential construction, meanwhile, increased 13 percent in August but was down 13 percent for the first eight months of 2009 compared with the same time a year ago. The largest gains have been for stimulus-funded projects—bridges, dams and highways. But the overall effect of stimulus funding is still hard to measure; only $151.4 billion of the original $787 billion in the stimulus act has been spent.

And there are growing concerns about the outlook for commercial property. At the heart of the problem: Much less credit is available, and lenders are increasingly cautious as office vacancy rates continue to rise. Vacancy rates could hit 20 percent in 2010.

The sense of uncertainty is not eased by our federal government, either, with proposals for health care reform, climate change and union organizing still up in the air. NRCA continues to be actively involved in all three of these big issues, none of which is likely to be enacted in its current form. Regarding health care, NRCA is concerned about mandates that could adversely affect small businesses, and they strongly oppose the so-called "public option." Regarding climate change, NRCA supports a number of measures to improve energy efficiency in buildings, but they oppose a massive carbon "cap and trade" program. And regarding union organizing—or "card check"—NRCA continues to monitor "compromises" that are being floated; some may even be worse than the original proposal. Interestingly, Arizona voters will decide by referendum next year whether to approve a constitutional ballot initiative that would pre-empt the card-check bill by mandating the right to vote in secret on authorizations for employee representation.

NRCA University will offer photovoltaics seminar

NRCA University offers a new seminar, Rooftop Photovoltaics: Energizing Your Business, which is designed for roofing contractors, designers and specifiers who are interested in properly designing, installing or maintaining photovoltaic roof systems. Click here for full story.

OSHA document addresses silica control

H1N1 preparedness guide for small businesses is available

The Small Business Administration (SBA) and U.S. Department of Homeland Security have announced the availability of a preparedness guide designed to help small businesses plan for the possibility of an H1N1 flu outbreak this fall. Click here for full story.

Registration is available for the NRLRC seminar

Registration is available for the National Roofing Legal Resource Center's (NRLRC's) 30th anniversary legal seminar, Roofing Issues: Decks to Dockets, Nov. 5-7, at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort, Los Cabos, Mexico. Click here for full story.

Workplace fatalities fell 10 percent in 2008
