What a huge week we had in the news. We had the deaths of icons Farrah Fawcett (who doesn't remember "that" poster) and Michael Jackson, plus late-night pitch man Billy Mays and Johnny Carson's sidekick Ed McMahon. The U.S. Senate finally filled its last seat after months of recounts and court challenges when comedian Al Franken was declared the winner in Minnesota. Mixed in somewhat under the radar was the U.S. House passing "Cap and Trade" which if passed by the Senate will most certainly be signed into law by President Obama. The Cap and Trade bill, which promises to reduce green house gas emissions, will likely have little effect. What the law would do however is impose a huge tax on energy and a loss of American jobs. I urge all of you to do some research on your own on Cap and Trade if you are not familiar with its consequences. There are provisions in the bill which would make it a particular business killer for home building and construction, not to mention the loss of personal income.

I hope that all of you that choose do hail and insurance work are getting your share out of the recent storms. With the construction downturn the timing could not have been better for our industry. In talking to many of you contractor members, it seems that there is plenty of work out there for all. I would urge you to remind your salespeople that per our mission statement, the CRA exists "…to promote the ethics, education, and image of the roofing industry…" As an association, we need to discourage the use of the deceptive sales practices used by out-of-state hail chasers or other quick buck roofers. We all know what these things are and what is right and wrong should be clear. Being a member of the CRA means you should have the integrity to rise above these practices. I am certain that all of you will be able to create a backlog of competitively priced work installed to the highest standards and represent our industry and association as professionals. This summer should offer a great opportunity to play catch-up, good luck and stay safe.

CRA Golf Tournament - August 21, 2009

CRA's Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, August 21st at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado.

For 27 years, CRA members have been coming together each summer for a round of golf, a little competition and to socialize with friends and associates within Colorado's roofing industry. In most recent years, the tournament has evolved into a fundraiser for future generations. The profits from the tournament are donated to CRA's Scholarship funds at both Red Rock's Community College & Colorado State University's Construction Management programs.

We will once again head to Southeast Denver. As we found out last year, Saddle Rock offers a memorable layout with great hole diversity. We look forward to another enjoyable tournament.

Sign up to play today . . .

The fee is $90.00 per player. This includes all green fees, golf cart, range balls, golf tees, green repair tool, bag tag, coffee and lunch buffet. The tournament is a Four Man scramble. Teams will be assigned by the golf pro by your average score.

Hole sponsorships are available. For $150, you can become a sponsor and have your company name displayed on a hole sign, at the clubhouse and in the monthly newsletters timely to the tournament. Or, DONATE a prize for the awards program.

CRA Loses two close friends

Brian O'Brien (pictured)- On June 5, 2009 it is with deep sadness, that we inform you of the passing of Brian O'Brien - friend and colleague. Brian was an Irishman who loved to laugh and play golf!

A note about Brian from Kelly Woods of Roofing Supply of Colorado. Brian started with us in June of 2003. Prior to that he was the sales manager/general manager of Fisher Chevrolet in Boulder. Brian knew nothing about the roofing business before starting with RSC. It was evident he was very intelligent and learned roofing materials quickly. He handled outside sales for us his entire career. When we informed him of our dress code ( specifically during summer) which allows nice golf type shorts he was ecstatic. From that point on even during blizzards shorts was the dress of the day for Brian. The automobile business never left him and he often referred to roofing material opportunities as deals "Kelly I'm looking at this deal I think I've got a good shot at."

He left his wife Ronda, two sons Joe and Ryan, one daughter Heather, one grandchild and one on the way. His parents are in their mid eighties and drive all around the country visiting their children, they drove straight through from their home in Minnesota upon hearing of Brian being sick. His dad still runs marathons. Brian loved to golf and loved to cook. His cooking rivaled fine chefs but if you ever asked for the recipes we're all pretty sure he left out key ingredients because every time I tried to cook one of his specialties it never ever tasted the same.

Brian will be missed by all of us. Kelly

C.B. "Ben" Bryan - On June 16, 2009 we note, with great sadness, the passing of our friend and colleague, Ben Bryan.

Ben had a long and distinguished career with Johns Manville holding several positions ranging from Regional Sales Manager, Manager of Strategic Customer Initiatives and National Distribution Manager.

Ben started with Fowler & Peth in March 2004 as our Commercial Sales Manager. Through his outstanding leadership, we grew our commercial/ industrial product sales to levels never achieved in our 61 years in business. During his all too short tenure, Ben was a friend and valuable mentor to all with whom he worked at Fowler & Peth.

Ben will be sorely missed, not only by everyone at F & P and his family, but by many contractors and distributors, all over the United States, with whom he worked over his long career.

Cutting Back on safety doesn't save.

Let's face it; today's economic climate is hard. And naturally, businesses are looking for ways to lower expenses. But there's one area where no business can afford to cut costs, especially now: safety.

"We're seeing policyholders cutting their safety budgets, including eliminating safety manager positions and other safety staff," said Dianne Tobias, Pinnacol's Director of Loss Prevention Services. "What they don't realize is that spending money on safety isn't an 'overhead' expense; it's an investment that delivers real financial returns."

There's plenty of business research and evidence showing a direct correlation between a company's safety performance and its financial performance. Here are just two examples:

  • OSHA's Office of Regulatory Analysis stated that companies that implement effective safety and health measures can "…expect reductions of 20 percent or greater in their injury and illness rates and a return of $4 to $6 for every $1 invested..."
  • A 2007 report released by Goldman Sachs JBWere concluded that companies that didn't adequately manage workplace safety and health performed worse financially than those that did.

In these economic times, you just can't afford to cut safety. Contact your Workers Compensation provider for a wealth of free safety resources to support your safety programs that can actually add to your company's bottom line.

CRA ITEMS TO NOTE

Cap & Trade, Summer "Mini Build", Paying for Deductibles Illegal in Colorado

Cap-and-trade scheme will rip economy.

The Coalition for Affordable American Energy, of which CRA is a member, issued a new study by the estimable Charles River Associates that exposes severe economic consequences of an Obama administration plan to restrict greenhouse gas emissions. The complete study and list of Coalition members is available here.

Rebuilding Throughout the Summer.

This summer Rebuilding Together Metro Denver (RTMD) is launching a new initiative called the Mini Build. Similar to a Rebuilding Day project, the Mini Build is smaller in scale and takes place on a day chosen by the sponsor and homeowner. Mini Build projects help aging homeowners to live independently in warm, safe and dry homes.

RTMD has a waiting list of homeowners right now who need help with essential repairs to their homes. If your company would like to become a sponsor, please contact Laurie Wagner at RTMD or call 720-524-0840.

Paying for deductibles, even partially, is illegal in Colorado.

Just a friendly reminder to the membership that discounted or free insurance claim roofing work and advertising of such is against the law under Colorado Statute #18-13-119.5. -- Abuse of property insurance.

ITEMS TO NOTE . . . FROM ACROSS THE NATION

It's safe to say that NRCA's Washington, D.C., staff is staying busy these days. New federal initiatives are coming in waves-mostly on the legislative front so far, but NRCA is also preparing for a new onslaught of regulations. Here's the latest:

  • The Employee Free Choice Act (also known as "card check" legislation,) has stalled in the Senate thanks to indications by three key Democrats (Lincoln, D-Ariz.; Feinstein, D-Calif.; and Specter, D-Pa.) that they will not support the measure in its current form. Behind-the-scenes discussions are being held to offer a compromise; NRCA remains skeptical any bill will be good.
  • A regulation that would mandate that federal contractors use E-Verify has been postponed again - this time to Sept. 8 - as the administration tries to develop a more complete approach to immigration. Or, hopefully, to put E-Verify on hold until it actually works.
  • President Obama is pushing hard for health care legislation; if a bill passes this year, NRCA believes it will include a number of measures that will make it more palatable to the business community. One such measure is to allow small businesses to form their own "cooperatives," or buying pools, which presumably could be developed through associations like NRCA.
  • A massive climate change bill, co-sponsored by Reps. Waxman (D-Calif.) and Markey (D-Mass.) also is being pushed hard, but NRCA doubts it has sufficient support to make it through the Senate. There are a lot of interesting, pro-energy components in the bill that could help the roofing industry; still, the complex "tax and trade" provisions in the bill mean it will be expensive and incredibly difficult to implement.

NRCA noted with interest a recent study that looked at federal regulations' effect on the economy. According to the study, Congress passed and the president signed into law a total of 285 bills in 2008. During the same time, federal regulatory agencies issued 3,830 final rules with compliance costs exceeding $1 trillion.

NRCA thinks we are likely to see even more regulations this year. They expect to see a number of new initiatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); issues OSHA is examining include worker exposure to silica, fall protection and even ergonomics.

And at the Treasury Department, the Internal Revenue Service is adding enforcement staff. One area they will be examining more closely is the use of "independent contractors"; employers may be obligated to withhold taxes if the "contractors" can't provide adequate ID numbers.

NRCA releases equipment cost schedule

NRCA has released the Roofing Contractors Equipment Cost Schedule, which provides descriptions of roofing equipment and tools and lists monthly, weekly, daily and hourly expense rates. Click here for full story.

NRCA offers free Roofing 101 module for registered users until July 15
